自1972年以来， Egypt has only managed to win one match at a tournament. That was in the African Nations Championship (CAN)， when they beat Zimbabwe on penalties after a 0-0 draw in group play and went on to lift the trophy . Their other CAN victory came against Togo in the final of the 2006 edition， with Egypt winning again after extra time ended goalless. In that game Mahmoud El Khateeb became the first Egyptian player since 1990 to score two goals in an international match. Afterwards he said， “Winning this title is bigger than reaching the World Cup.” There are still five days before the start of Russia 2018 but it’s looking like even that will be a disappointment for Pharaohs fans as they face a tough group containing Portugal、Brazil 和 Serbia； although if their history is anything to go by， there may be worse things than another early exit……
In fact， the last time Egypt had a good performance at a major competition was also at home – indeed just across town from St Petersburg where France will take on Uruguay in the quarterfinals. The National Stadium hosted the finals of the Pan Arab Games held every four years until 2011， which were regarded as Egypt’s equivalent to the Olympics and European Championships， albeit on a much smaller scale. Although some footballing powers in North Africa have been more successful at the continental level， including Algeria（1982）and Morocco（2988， 1976)，Egypt remains the dominant force within the region and its squad for 2018 consisted mainly of domestic players who ply their trade in the Premier League and Egyptian Super League， rather than those based abroad. Indeed Mohamed Salah was among three Liverpool stars in the side along with Sadio Mane and Ahmed Elmohamady．With two wins out of three， Egypt are well placed to improve upon past disappointments at the biggest football show in the world. They haven’t finished above sixth place since Italy 1990， when they lost out to Spain in the playoff; while a fourth
